Families of children with learning disabilities have been urged to write to their MP to campaign for easier access to cash held in child trust funds following a government delay.
All children born between 2002 and 2011 were given a child trust fund, but in a flaw in the system, the parents of those without the capacity to prove their identity need to apply to the Court of Protection for permission to withdraw the money.
Once they turn 18, every child can access their fund which holds around £1,500 on average, but could be more if family members have made additional contributions.
In November last year, the Ministry of Justice proposed a scheme that would allow parents of learning disabled children to access payments up to £2,500 from their child’s trust fund or other saving account without having to go to court, but last month said that no response would now be issued until this autumn.
Campaigners point out that young people with life-limiting conditions should be able to enjoy the benefits these savings can bring. As much as £33m may be locked away.
