Charity Dimensions has found alarming discrepancies in how GPs treat patients with learning disabilities and the general population, and has launched #MyGPandMe, a campaign for change.
Researchers found that people with learning disabilities are five times more likely to end up in hospital for issues that can be treated by their GP.
Almost a third of people with learning disabilities or autism felt less likely to be treated with care and concern at their doctor’s surgery and two thirds said their GP did not make reasonable adjustments for them.
Most family doctors told researchers they wanted more training, and the #MyGPandMe campaign is providing training for GP surgery staff and is calling on policymakers to reduce health inequality.
You can encourage your GP to request training with a #MyGPandMe information leaflet. Download it here.
