First run for Richard at Maccabi GB

21 June 2019

Raise a cheer at Sunday’s Maccabi GB Community Fun Run for first-time participant, our Chief Executive, Richard Franklin. He will be running with Eli Cohen who is supported by Kisharon. The event is taking place in Learning Disability Week (June 17-23) which has the theme of sport and inclusion.

“There can be no better showcase for Learning Disability Week than the Community Fun Run,” Richard said. “Participants run shoulder to shoulder with people we support and that is exactly how we aspire to be as a community and society; with the people we support able to live their lives as they wish.”

Richard is running the 5k event alongside Eli. “Eli says he is very fast and I believe him,” says Richard who is less confident of the speed he can muster. “I do jog every morning, but very slowly and the pace of the job means I only get out for 30 minutes every day.”

Richard joked that his fundraising target for Sunday is £2.3m – the amount Kisharon needs every year to maintain its services, and you can support the duo through their joint fundraising page here.

Events organised throughout Learning Disability Week across the country have shown how sport and physical activity can reduce loneliness and isolation and improve health and wellbeing.

More than 6,500 adults and children are expected to take part in the Community Fun Run, with stalls and sideshows at the event making it a popular day out for all the family.

“The world stands on three things: Torah, the service of G-d, and deeds of kindness.” Kisharon looks at the person not the disability, teaching Torah, Middos and Mitzvot embracing and cherishing everybody’s special talent and bringing out the best in them.
