Rosh Hashanah baking marathon

07 September 2015

This week at Kisharon adult day centre in Hendon a team of volunteers were busy baking hundreds of honey cakes and cookies to raise funds. The initiative came from Claire Zulman who enlisted the help of daughters Amy Sherman, Michaela Zulman and Harriet Zulman and a number of friends as well as people supported by Kisharon.

The bakers have used 300 jars of honey and have taken delivery of more than 700 eggs – the latter were courtesy of Kosher Kingdom supermarket in Golders Green. The delicious goodies were produced under the supervision of the London Beth Din (KLBD).

“The recipe is from Johannesburg – it’s a trade secret,” said Claire Zulman. “Kisharon ticks all the boxes for me because it is a Jewish charity and it supports vulnerable people with learning disabilities. I enjoy baking and I wanted to come up with an idea that would engage other people to use their culinary skills and give something back to the community.”

Mrs Zulman said their target was to bake 300 honey cakes and 600 oat and raisin and chocolate chip cookies.

In addition to Mrs Zulman and her daughters, the baking volunteers were Mandy Carlin, Ruth Cohen, Sharon Faith, Lesley Finger, Natalie Goldstein, Lesley Okin, Sue Pollock, Meryl Rosenberg, Merle Singer and Kim Yudelowitz.

Chloe Adelstone, Hilary Appell, Illana Ellison, Anne Green, Courtney Krok, Peter Lewinson, Geraldine Frankel and Eliane Vogel will be helping to sell and deliver the cakes.

Kisharon Chief Executive Dr Beverley Jacobson applauded the initiative, saying: “The most amazing aromas have been coming out of our kitchen. I am so impressed with the dedication and professionalism of this outstanding group of volunteers – including people we support who will be helping with packaging, selling and deliveries. This is a wonderful way to celebrate Rosh Hashanah while raising funds for Kisharon.”

The cakes will go on sale at a stall outside Salt Spa, 814 Finchley Road (Temple Fortune) NW11 6XR on Wednesday 9, Thursday 10 and Friday 11 September, from 10am to 3pm.
