PPE – how kind-hearted donors and good luck played a part

19 June 2020

Luck and the generosity of donors gave Kisharon the PPE (personal protection equipment) needed when other care organisations faced severe shortages.

Colin Spanjar, Project Coordinator explained: “We approached Barnet Council, but found all the PPE had been diverted to the NHS.”
Kisharon turned to its suppliers, and one had a huge amount. Colin said: “We bought the lot. In one week alone, we spent £10k on PPE.”

The investment paid off. It was vital to support staff as individuals contracted the virus, and Kisharon managed to buy even more from suppliers later on. But Kisharon’s good fortune in having everything its staff needed on hand was largely down to five important donations. Here, we pay tribute to the individuals and companies that supported Kisharon in the toughest of times.

– International businessman and philanthropist Moshe Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress, donated 700 face masks. These came from Marie van de Zyl, Chair of the Board of Deputies who was asked to distribute on his behalf.

– Israeli start-up company Sonovia, which is developing life-saving technologies, donated 100 anti-viral face masks.  Dr Jason Migdal of Sonovia offered to help, possibly as a result of publicity during the Kisharon ‘Carry on’ fundraising campaign.

– Health care staff agency Devine Care gave Kisharon face masks at a time when they were in short supply.

– 4 the key workers  – this organisation was launched by entrepreneur Harry Spencer who has been sourcing PPE and donating it to charities. Harry, introduced to Kisharon by a donor, is based in China, but in lockdown in the UK. He has given Kisharon shoe covers, protective body suits and visors and screens.

– Dr Florence Weinberg and The John Lyon School in Harrow. Physics teacher, Dr Weinberg, using the school’s printer and materials it donated, made forty visors for Kisharon.
