South African-born Kimberley Gundle is artist of the month for November at Equal, Kisharon’s fabulous gift shop in Temple Fortune.
Kimberley’s dramatic work is inspired by the Maasai tribes located between Kenya and Tanzania. She has lived in remote settlements, making drawings and taking photographs and ploughs back funds from sales. Currently, Kimberley is supporting a water project in Tanzania.
Of her involvement with Kisharon, she said: “It is good to be able to help other communities.”
Kimberley’s work has been exhibited worldwide. All of her pottery is hand-built, and not made on a pottery wheel. She explained: “They are all individual pieces – nothing can be replicated. I have plates, vases, fruit bowls and platters. Some of the pieces, like the platters, are head portraits of people I have met.”
Customers will also have the opportunity to purchase one of Kimberley’s hand-rolled silk chiffon scarves. She also creates bespoke rugs.
If you visit the shop to see Kimberley’s one-off pieces and hope to see the artist herself you might be disappointed. Kimberley is busy getting ready to exhibit at her next exhibition, at the Venice Biennale in 2017.
