Kisharon has been awarded a $50,000 prize for its work in helping adults with learning disabilities integrate into the community.
The US-based Ruderman Family Foundation made the award to Kisharon’s Adult Employment Programme which has found more than 60 new work placements this year alone.
Five charities were honoured by the Ruderman Family, but Kisharon was the sole recipient from the UK.
With Kisharon’s help, adults with complex needs are working in bakeries, butchers, schools, launderettes and supermarkets. New employees are taught travel skills and timekeeping and employers are supported to ensure that jobs are done well. The employment programme gives people with learning disabilities the same opportunities as mainstream peers.
“Kisharon is honoured to receive this international award from as esteemed a body as the Ruderman Family Foundation. With the backing of the Ruderman Family we are excited at the prospect of being able to extend our reach and share our model to assist more people with disabilities in England and beyond,” said Dr Beverley Jacobson, Kisharon Chief Executive.
Jay Ruderman, President of the Ruderman Family Foundation said: “As our worldwide Jewish community begins to accept and practice the value that all Jewish people have a right to belong and participate in Jewish life, this year’s Ruderman Prize in Inclusion awardees set the standard for the rest of our community organisations to aspire to attain. It is our hope that these awardees not only serve as the gold standard for disability inclusion in their communities, but for the entire Jewish community across the globe.”
