Employment success

20 April 2018

Sophie Goligorsky, who has learning disabilities, pictured below with new colleagues Jerry Platts and Liam Hutchins at central London property company GVA, is the latest success story from Kisharon’s employment programme.

Sophie, who restocks print rooms for the company and handles the post is the 42nd individual this year to find work through the employment programme – a ten per cent increase.

“We cannot emphasise enough how meaningful it is to have a job, however small that job may seem,” explained Shlomo Weltman, who runs the programme. “It gives a purpose to their day, and the opportunity to travel and meet new people.”

New jobs are always wanted, and entry-level jobs are the ones Shlomo needs.

He said: “Often people doing a basic-level job will get bored, but individuals with learning disabilities are very good at jobs that involve repetition and accuracy. They almost always demonstrate enthusiasm and perseverance until the task is completed.”

Employers will empathise with people we support, and understand that they might need to take more time than usual to explain a particular task, and that the new employee might take longer to get to grips with it.

To date, Kisharon’s employment programme has placed individuals in warehouses, print firms, schools, nurseries, grocery stores and in solicitors’ and accountancy offices in north west and central London.

Those looking for work – who may be already supported by Kisharon, or referred privately or by Jobcentre Plus – are interviewed and assessed to make sure the role found for them meets their preferences.

As for Sophie, she is enjoying her new job and although had never travelled alone before, is almost ready to tackle the journey from her home to central London unaccompanied.

Shlomo said: “Sophie is doing very well. She is very sociable and gets along extremely well with all her colleagues.”
