A new home opens for women

15 November 2021

Five women with learning disabilities will be starting independent lives at Kisharon’s new supported living home in Decoy Avenue, Golders Green.

The location of the house, in the heart of Golders Green lets the women remain closely connected to their community, families and friends and cutting-edge technology will give them greater control over their lives.

“This development is a natural and a positive progression in the road to independence and equality, irrespective of learning and physical disability and the location is fundamental to its success,” said Hadassa Kessler, Kisharon’s Director of Operations.

The modern flats – there are two on the ground floor of the house and three on the first floor – each have four rooms, a hall, bedroom, fully fitted kitchen and lounge/dining area and are especially adapted for people with complex disabilities and mobility issues. Storage areas are included for bulky mobility equipment. The ground floor has staff accommodation, a communal kitchen and lounge and access to the landscaped garden.

Inside, a lift will take residents from the ground floor to the first if their mobility recedes over time.

Wireless technology will bring independent living within reach and gives the women freedom of choice. Alexa and similar voice-activated technology will activate TVs, heating, light and open windows.

Residents will be supported to pay their bills, be neighbourly, take medication or to be reliable at work or at an equivalent vocational opportunity.

All will need support with cooking. Kitchen worktops are adjustable, oven doors are lower and open at wheelchair height and the tiling adjacent to the sink areas are in two colours, for milk and meat.

The five flats were filled quickly and there is still a waiting list for accommodation.

Hadassa said: “This new facility is very important and meets a growing need within our community. If it did not exist these women would remain at home with their families, with ageing parents who are increasingly frail or otherwise struggling to continue to provide support.

“Parents are often unable to have respite, attend family events or to progress with their own lives due to ongoing continual and unremitting care responsibilities.”
