Pesach salute for Armed Forces

05 May 2022

Jewish personnel in the British Armed Forces received Pesach supplies from Kisharon, with one recipient saying his box was ‘one of the highlights of the year’.

Eighty boxes containing a choice of egg or regular matzah, ingredients to make charoset, a Pesach cake and matzah-patterned serviettes were sent to serving personnel. Those for families with primary school-aged children included a craft kit and an invitation to join Kisharon’s Big Sweep online event to search for chametz.

The eventual destination of the boxes was unknown, but recipients expressed gratitude. ‘Thank you everyone. Can’t wait to dig in,’  ‘Cheers for the package. Much appreciated,’ ‘Fantastic box came Liverpool way,’ and, ’Thank you for the Pesach package which arrived today. Matzah-patterned napkins – genius.”

The Pesach boxes, ordered by the Armed Forces Jewish Community, was a joint project between Kisharon’s social enterprise team and students at Kisharon College, for whom it was an invaluable work opportunity.

The students assembled, packed and labelled the boxes, hand writing the addresses. They took the parcels to the post office on public transport after buying postage stamps.

The job taught the students food safety and hygiene, health and safety and numeracy and literacy.

Each order was read and counted, key information had to be written and the students worked as a team to problem solve and complete the job within a specific time frame.

One student said: “When you think you can’t do something and then you try it, you can do it, and then you can be proud of it.” Another said they had learnt to be patient and to work with others in a team.

Aviva Braunold, Manager of Kisharon College said: “It was a great success  to see all the students completing their tasks and see everyone continue to develop their skills throughout each stage of the process.”
