Young helpers lend a hand

07 July 2016

Lending a hand at Kisharon has become a priority for an incredible team of young volunteers in the Shabbos Walking Project who spend their free time helping others.

Every Shabbos 18 young people from local schools in the community help men and women in Kisharon’s supported living homes.

Eliezer Gilbert, a teacher at Pardes House Grammar School who set up the project says: “On Shabbos afternoons, there are very few people from outside coming in and giving time and attention to people in supported living. Our volunteers have got to know them individually and feel comfortable with them.”

The young volunteers play games, learn, sing, or just sit and chat at Eagle Lodge, Leeside Crescent, Montpelier Rise and Lionel Leighton Court. They accompany – and collect – those having Shabbos lunch with local families. Volunteers also light candles with women in supported living as Shabbos comes in – although there are generally Jewish support workers on duty.

Volunteer Coordinator Lara Domjan said: “Eliezer and his team bring so much to our homes on Shabbos. Not only do they visit the homes and sing songs and do other activities, but Eliezer has a wide network of families that invite people for Shabbos meals.”

Every week, the Shabbos Walking Project arranges for around 300 young people to support individuals needing help at more than 100 locations in the community.
