What it means to have Down’s Syndrome, by Micah

30 March 2017

Micah Samuels, who has Down’s Syndrome, told his peers at Kisharon School all about the condition on World Down Syndrome Day.

The school marked the event with an assembly for the older students led by Headteacher Sora Kopfstein.

She said: “We learned that we all have similarities, but also differences, and these are what makes each and every one of us unique.”

Once a week, Sora runs assemblies on important topics for the older students. To date, these have included Fairtrade farming and the health risks of alcohol, smoking and drugs. These assemblies are designed to broaden pupils’ knowledge of their local community and communities world-wide as well as to give them an insight into their own health and development.

World Down Syndrome Day is observed globally on 21 March every year – selected because the cause of Down’s Syndrome is the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21 in a baby’s cells.

The organisation Down Syndrome International encourages people across the world to raise awareness, explain what it means to have the condition and to put across the message that those with Down’s Syndrome play a vital role in our communities.
