View Bettina Caro’s vibrant work at Equal

22 December 2016

See the vibrant and richly-coloured paintings of Bettina Caro at Equal, artist of the month for December.

Bettina was born in Casablanca and much of her work captures her North African childhood and Sephardi upbringing.

A direct descendant of Rabbi Yosef Caro, author of the Shulchan Aruch, Bettina studied art and architecture in Spain. She moved to the UK in 1981 and now works from a studio in Hampstead.

Bettina credits her father, an amateur artist, for encouraging her to take up painting. She said: “I have developed my own distinct style to capture the Mediterranean landscapes of my youth and the Sephardi Jewish rituals that punctuated our family life.”

Bettina’s work is on public display at the Board of Deputies, and the Israeli Embassy in London.

In 2011, the London Jewish Cultural Centre ran a retrospective of Bettina’s work: ‘A Journey into Sepharad’, which focused on the paintings inspired by her childhood.
