It’s Shabbat UK!

26 October 2017

The aroma of bread baking filled Kisharon as the services organised their own challah bakes in the run up to Shabbat UK, which starts this evening.

Children at Tuffkid Nursery, using the Shabbat UK recipe, learned how to weigh and measure ingredients and knead dough. The dough rose overnight and the following day they rolled it, and made challot to take home.

Students at Kisharon’s new vocational skills course at Childs Hill Library enjoyed a challah bake too. Using pictorial shopping lists, the students went to the shops to buy the correct ingredients. Pictorial guides helped them to make the dough which they were shown how to plait. Finally, their challot were taken to Kisharon’s head office at Parson Street for baking. The exercise became a lesson in time and measurements.

People we support also lent a hand at The Great Musical Challah Make at Allianz Park, Hendon on Thursday afternoon to help set up the event, including Fychi Hirshler who attended with Support Worker, Polly Altusky.

Meanwhile, north of the border, students at Edinburgh JSoc organised a Shabbat UK challah bake and donated the proceeds – £60 to Kisharon.

Closer to home, at the Equal Gifts and Homeware Shop at Temple Fortune, aromatic beeswax Shabbat candles, made by Eliane Vogel and Ilana Ellison were sold for Shabbat UK.

Irit Levit-Hajioff, Assistant Store Manager, said: “I thought my input in helping Eliane and Ilana to make the candles would be far greater than it turned out because Ilana and Eliane knew how to make candles already. The candles are beautiful and beeswax is a natural air purifier.”

The beeswax candles are on sale at £4 a pair.
