Building work to begin in May for new school

22 February 2018

Plans are underway for building work to start at on the new Kisharon School in May. The former head office in Parson Street will be transformed into a cutting edge school for children with learning disabilities.

Artists’ impressions show the facilities that await those who will enter the school in early 2020, its scheduled opening date.

The drawing above shows one of the eleven spacious classrooms.

Its sheer size and the enclosed outdoor space – a feature of some classes – are sufficiently roomy for solo and group activities even with the children using walking aids, wheelchairs and other equipment to aid their mobility.

Equipment that provides sensory stimulus for pupils will be incorporated in the design and at the appropriate level so it can be accessed by all.

Making the classrooms light and airy was an important consideration and crucial for creating a good and calm environment for learning.

Outdoor spaces are all close to the main teaching area so the children benefit from outdoor learning and activities.

This drawing shows an exciting first glimpse of the main entrance.

The all-important PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities) unit is on the left, with a rooftop outdoor learning space where children can grow fruit and vegetables.

On the right stands the early years unit for nursery and reception classes. As with classrooms, outdoor spaces are given priority, with a number of areas for sheltered play and learning.
